Shaken, not stired
You can call it a dive, but it's really a lounge.
I used to run an office just up the road from Air Conditioned. The owner, whose name I forget, is a very nice guy who opened a handful of successful clubs in LA with a business partner, then decided to try his hipster model here in San Diego.
It works. It works so well that 94.9 FM's "Big Sonic Chill" has moved its Tuesday night show to the spot.
The atmosphere is posh, hip, and generally friendly. All the furniture is custom-made vinyl. The bar is fun to sit at and look at. Limited beers on tap, large top-shelf selection, decent prices. DJ booth is front and center, and I've always been pleased by the talent (though I've never sat back and had the old "God is a DJ" bumper sticker reaffirmed while at this place).
Seating is mostly against the walls with the aforementioned custom booth and bench seating, two or three floating tables, and then there's the pit.
The place has a seating pit sunk into one corner that's a dry cleaner's worst nightmare. It's actually quite Pimp (tm), surrounded by crushed stone and graced with elegant cocktail tables ... but the whole thing is covered in black shag. It's positively furry. But honestly, I have yet to go in the place and be disgusted by it, so I guess they bend over backwards to clean it daily.
Overall, this is a great place to see and be seen. You'll certainly impress your hip friends or business associates who like to live it up by taking them here. If you're looking to conversate, go early or learn sign language. The folk seem to become less open to random conversation/interaction as the night moves on. I suspect this is directly related to the fact that the hip quotient rises in conjunction. In general, the vibe is friendly and certainly open and tolerant.
Good times, good lounge.
