Fresh Veggies, folk art, and community spirit!!!
Every week I go, if for anything to check out the local flair. Every Wednesday between 4-7pm, in a little beach community called Ocean Beach in San Diego they close off Newport Street for two city blocks and let independent sellers of food, knick-knacks, well... just about whatever. Musicians will line the street and play tune for a dollar. I even saw a boy of about 8 playing his first recorder (tiny flute for those that don't know). He admitted that he wasn't very good and just learning. The boy wasn't a vagrant. He had nice skate shoes on and was dressed and clean. He simply wanted an audience to play to. I asked him to play me something and he did. Across the way the smells of outdoor cooked food and fresh cooked veggies and flowers filled the air. Mixing that with the cool breeze from the Pacific only a block away. It was breath taking.

In front of the International Youth Hostel a local woman is teaching a rouge traveler on how to peddle wares. The woman recognized me as a local (even though I had only been here a couple weeks now). She has these hand made wood bracelets and anklets made with hemp rope. I sadly didn't have the cash on hand and she tells me that it's no problem. I can give here the money next week when I see here there. I couldn't take advantage of such generosity, so I I went promptly to the ATM to grab another twenty dollar bill.

The OB Farmer's Market is a great experience for locals and it brings the community together. As if this little piece of heaven needed anything more. - D^3 , posted 06/06/09
