This place may be a favorite hipster hang out, but I am never eating there again. The food is decent, but really, I'd prefer Ranchos or El Zarape over it any day. I've heard many horror stories about their sanitation practices in the kitchen, which may or may not be true. And I've known people who have gotten sick. My main beef is that he waitstaff is always rude. I am a former waitress, so I'm pretty understanding of my waitress having a cranky day because she's overworked. But there's a difference between stressed out and just plain abusive. I honestly don't think I've ever boycotted a place because I had a bad experience with a server. Pokez staff is just over the top rude, just about every time I've ever been in there. The last straw was one day when I came in there with a friend. It was busy, and we stood at the door by ourselves waiting to be seated. We stood there for about 15 minutes and the staff totally ignored us. My back had been hurting that day, so I was in pain and needed to sit down. There was one open table, which still had dishes on it. I finally got sick of waiting and just sat down at the table. The waitstaff then continued to ignore us, seemingly on purpose, for another few minutes. Then a waitress came over, stacked the plates, and said in a very mean voice "you shouldn't sit down at a table that isn't cleared" and then stormed off. My friend and I were shocked, so we just got up and left. I will never eat there again. - Drea , posted 09/17/07 |

If you go to any dope under ground skate spot, surf spot, punk or hip hop dive bar, the loc's will always have some attitude. It's their land and you have to chill. It's a small price to pay for the barrels you get or the grinding, or the hype underground talent droppen skills. If you don't bug-out the loc's everything is nice. Don't go in there for service. Go in there for a dope meal and sneak your own beer in there to get back at them for taking too long... Anyhow they let me DJ in there once when I lived in the hood and they gave me free beers the whole time. From like 3 till 8pm and shit. Everyone was cool except for this one super nar punk-rock bitch with bowling shoes and a big butt waitress. She kept bouncing me off the decks every hour and put on a punk record. I thought it was rad. I understood cause I was in a bunch of punk bands once. Anyhow I thought it went over cool with the crowd. How else should you dj punk rock besides pushing people out of the way to play your record. What ever I don't drink anymore... If you are looking for rad service don't go there. The food rules! brian1789.livejournal.com/595105.html Evidently, the management thinks it's appropriate to for a waitress to shake and berate an young autistic patron who's taking a bit too long to order. That's assault & battery in California, not to mention the Americans With Disabilities Act. Do not bring your children to Pokez. Doesn't sound like they'd be safe. - Pirate , posted 02/25/07 |

this is one of my favorite restaurants in san diego. a miriad of people have discovered this little spot and for good reason...its amazing. they serve large portions of the most amazing mexican food ever and they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as your traditional meat. some people would complain about the service but do you really go to a restaurant to make friends or do you go to eat and leave. their staff is very laid back and cool. leave big tips, though, cause that's how they pay their bills. - Justin , posted 03/30/06 |

I can't believe I haven't found this place before. I've been looking for this kind of food for 2 years now and I can't believe how good it is! Try the potato burrito. Yumm yumm. - Yannick , posted 10/16/05 |

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Sangria! The food is great too and there are lots of creative vegetarian options. I live in Oceanside so I don't get to indulge frequently but when I take the Coaster downtown we almost always start out with some Sangria from Pokez! - Hipnautica

Although your food can take a long time to come to you, relax with a beer and some awesome homemade chips and salsa, rifle through one of the many free papers available just outside, and prepare for the best vegan/vegetarian mexican food you'll ever have. Their chimichangas are fantastic, as are everything else on the menu. The food is simple, and simply awesome! - Jenni , posted 08/23/05 |

Located on the corner of 10th and E Streets, downtown San Diego. EXCELLENT potato, tofu, mushroom burritos. zBilled as a "green restaurant." Their food and their prices are great! Mind you, the name says it all ... you may have to wait but, it's worth it! - Schpanky , posted 07/06/05 |

Thats the first clue that your about to enter into a not so normal mexican taco shop on the corner of some street. Great options! Great art on the walls! Great food! Tofu burrito is enough for you and a friend to split! It takes awhile, but its worth it. Support it! A great way for vegetarians or vegans to put their money where their mouth is! - Marijayne , posted 04/25/05 |

because the food wont arrive in time. I am so not kidding. I love the vegan burrito but i have to call over and pick it up because food may literally take 45 mins to get to you. Take a group of chatty friends and hang out. - Divya , posted 04/17/05 |

or something. it's really exactly what it was intended to be by the dude who opened it. it's a great place for people to come and get good food, with tons of options for the veggie/vegan/carnivore folks, for insanely cheap, in a cool atmosphere. the service is reallly slow, but that's just fine because they (at least used to) only work for tips. so tip them well, and treat them nice. and enjoy the vegetarian choriso burrito. wet. with cheese. - erraticBehavior , posted 02/27/05 |

Seriously, Pokez is one of the gems of downtown. It looks shabby, but in a cute punk rock sort of way. The menu is chock full of tons of filling, gigantic portions of good cheap authentic mexican food. The best part is for vegans and vegetarians - they have TONS of options. I mean tons. Probably better to get veggie food here than the meat! But they have that as well - including fish and really interesting microbrews. The staff can range anywhere from grumpy to sweet and the service can too. Be patient and tip a lot because they're a co-op! The restaurant doubles as a club at night, catering to the community college/punk/alterna crowd. Good times indeed. - kira , posted 09/11/04 |
