Decent beer, but run of the mill
Rockbottom is, to my understanding, a vestigal brewpub chain that survived the millenium shakeout in style. These things are all over the country.
Their brews are pretty good, certainly worth an afternoon's exploration. If you really do enjoy beer, start with their sampler tray, then move on from there. If you have a pretty good idea that you'll like, say, an IPA, the bartender will poor you a bit and a little of the Pale Ale or something similar to compare if you ask, gratis.
However, presumably because of this place's location in the gaslamp, the management has really gone after the weekend psuedo-nightclub thing. Be careful on the weekends if you're not looking for a scene. Waits on weekends can be stupidly long.
The food is largely overpriced but is certainly a few steps up from a Chili's or something similar. Not a bad place for a business lunch or an out-of-town guest in a pinch, but certainly isn't a restaraunt that leaves an impression ... it's kind of a brew-pub-Bennigans on the west coast.
