For Real
I love dive bars. After spending wasted hours wandering the NYC streets for a place I can sit with a beer and not be pushed up against, or spilled on, or have my eardrum explode I was eager to find solace in a laid back bar environment in San Diego. I thought that it would be easy. And it was.

Whistle Stop is becoming my home away from home. Great Happy Hour (hello? $5 Kettle One Cosmos), fun music trivia nights, game nights and movie afternoons. And it is never crowded when I am there (except when the DJ and live music begins).

The perfect place to sip a drink, bring a book, watch South Park with the captions on and the bar captivated. Besides where else but in South Park would I meet two cool guys named Kyle and Kenny? No, I really did. I just hope to run into them again with their friend Eric. - Jenne , posted 12/03/07

Very cool place
They put out water bowls for doggies on week nights (not weekends, it's too busy for dogs) and there is a smoking area. Drinking AND smoking? I love you, WS. - Susan , posted 07/22/05

Great local bar - a non-scene scene
First time I walked into the Whistlestop, I thought I was back in Seattle. Mellow vibe, people do their own thing but are very friendly.

Let's face it - any place worth hanging and having a drink in is somewhat of a scene by by default. None of us would be there otherwise. The Whistlestop is a straight-up locals bar in the South Park neighborhood, and it's great.

On weekend nights, the place gets pretty packed and the characters come out. Can be a lot of fun. Can also be very loud, so plan to have your conversations before and after. Weekday evenings are generally mellow but upbeat. Jukebox is good but not great - has an eclectic mix of classic fair and a decent amount of local goodness. Bartenders run the gamut from really damned cool to holier than thou ... oddly, this corresponds directly to the tips I give. <g>

Lots of activities. While I haven't joined the knitting group (Sunday, I think), Tuesday night - board game night - is a great activity to bring a small group of friends to. - Dave , posted 03/12/05

A great neighborhood & A lovely bar!
I love the whistle stop. Although it definitely has its scenesters, it is not a trendy bar. A friend of mine introduced me to it and I've been there several times since, even though it's nowhere near where I live. The atmosphere is chill and there is always good indie rock and/or eclectic jazz and whatnot blasting in the background. Good, strong drinks are served. Lots of theme nights like board game night! Oh my. Good times. And a cute neighborhood too. - kira , posted 09/11/04
