Good food and service
I went there twice already and the food is pretty good. But it's not the best in town. - Amy , posted 01/12/08

You will be in the bathroom for a day.....
Never should a sushi restaurant smell like fish. Fresh fish doesn't smell like old fish.
My husband got extremely sick from eating nigiri tuna.
We are all about supporting our neighborhood anything but BLECH.

The sushi chef to me was not very knowledgeable either.
Service was just so so. I would say it is a waste of time and money.
If you are gonna waste time and money you should go to Ono Sushi on University and sit in front of James. You will be glad you did it, he is amazing.

food poisoning
don't eat the teriyaki. i got food poisoning.

used to be a regular for the sashimi. it used to be an excellent value, but the cuts are becoming progressively lower quality and smaller for the same price.

pretty good sushi
Their tofu roll is good, and so are the avocado tempura. I'd say that overall, the sushi is mid range in quality... better than sushi deli but not as good as ono sushi. Staff is always friendly, atmosphere is nice. - Drea , posted 09/17/07

Trendy and Horrible
This is the worst sushi I've ever tasted. The sushi "chefs" were surly and the waiters apathetic. I should never go to a restaurant on recommendation from the SD CityBeat. Blech! Now that I've lived here long enough, I can see every time I pass by here why people go here. It's a corner restaurant with big windows, kind of like a fish tank, and all the hipsters like to be seen. Good. They can have it. I'll go to Sushi Bar Kazumi in Hillcrest where the food is fresh and expertly prepared. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/09/06

Good Sushi in the hood
Zensei has great sushi. It is a bit pricey, but the Dream Roll and the 30th and Upas Roll are not to be missed. The tofu fries are also really good. I agree that it smells like fish in their sometimes, but I have never had fish that was anything but fresh. - Kate , posted 07/27/06

3 strikes you're out
There are some things that shouldn't smell as they appear. One of these is a sushi bar. It has smelled of warm(old?) fish everytime i have been in.

Tried it three times, and can't say I will go back. The atmosphere is fair and it's nice to have a sushibar in the 'hood, but the food has never lived up to expectation.

THey have amazing Creamcheese-stuffed Tempura jalapeno poppers, but other than that; wander 15 blocks into hillcrest for rolls.

kinda loud for some taste so if you want a quiet meal do not go there.
the sushi chefs are superb. if you get the chance try the new zealand pearl white nigiri. best fish I have EVER had... melts in your mouth.

Good food - but jarringly loud
I was very excited when this place opened - is close to my house and I love sushi. The staff was helpful and the menu was pretty good. Slightly pricey, but it's sushi.

I won't go back though - the sound system was jarringly bad. The glass was rattling. I had to yell over the music to my friends. The lack of fabric in their made the room into a giant echo chamber. Whatever the opposite of mellow and comfortable is - that is the vibe we were getting.

I'd love to have them either kill the music or get their sound system professionally installed. - My Body is a Temple , posted 06/13/05

*Zensei brightens up North Park*
I love that North Parkians now have a sushi place to call our own and a GOOD one at that. Super fresh, really nide staff and affordable. The only downfall...last time I was there, they were full and only one sushi chef on duty. - Amy , posted 03/24/05
